Temporary Resident Permit (TRP)
A Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) allows individuals who are inadmissible to Canada to enter or remain in the country temporarily, when justified by urgent need or exceptional circumstances.
Issued by IRCC, TRPs are granted only when the benefits of your stay outweigh the risks of inadmissibility. They may be valid for a few days up to three years, and can be extended if needed.
Who Needs a TRP?
You may need a TRP if you’re inadmissible due to:
Criminal history (e.g., DUI, assault, theft—even if from years ago)
Medical inadmissibility
Immigration non-compliance (overstays, unauthorized work)
Misrepresentation
Security concerns or prior deportations
How to Apply?
TRPs can be requested:
From inside Canada (if already present)
At a Port of Entry (e.g., airport or land border—for urgent travel)
Applications must include:
Valid reason for entry or stay
Explanation of inadmissibility
Supporting documents (court records, rehab proof, letters, travel plans)
TRP vs. Criminal Rehabilitation
If criminal history is the reason for inadmissibility:
Criminal Rehabilitation: A permanent fix after 5+ years since sentence completion
TRP: Temporary solution, often used while waiting for rehab or PR eligibility
