The Struggle is Real
Many students, like Tasnimah Ahmed from the Ontario College of Art & Design, are worried about being forced to return home after years of hard work. “It feels so unfair,” she says. “We’ve put our hearts into our studies, and now our futures are in doubt.”
The government recently announced plans to cut international study permits by 10% in 2025, following a big 35% reduction this year. New, stricter rules for post-graduate work permits are adding to the anxiety.
“I feel stuck,” says Mehnaz Lamia, a student representative. “Every day is filled with uncertainty. The rules can change at any time.”
Why Students Feel Targeted
Students believe they’re being unfairly singled out while other groups, like working professionals, have easier paths to permanent residency. In September alone, Canada issued thousands of invitations for permanent residency, mostly benefiting those already working in the country.
“We need more support,” Lamia insists. “It’s time for the government to prioritize students.”
A Call for Fairness
Advocates are pushing for equal treatment for all migrants. Chris Ramsaroop from Justice for Migrant Workers highlights how many communities are struggling under current rules.
In response, the government says they’re trying to balance immigration while providing adequate support.
Looking Ahead
As international students face these challenges, it’s crucial to stand together. Let’s push for policies that create fair opportunities for everyone, ensuring that all students can chase their dreams in Canada.
